Following the RDA-Europe / BlueBRIDGE Datathon on Fisheries and Aquaculture on the 15th and 16th June 2017 in Heraklion, Crete, a Report has been created which describes the results of the Datathon.

The datathon was structured in such a way that initiated extremely interesting discussions, which in particular helped in knowledge transfer from the experts to the 75 participants. Not only can the event be considered very successful by the organisers, but the participants also believed that the event was very productive as they proactively participated in the event and worked for two full days, exploiting the tools and datasets suggested by the organisers.

On Thursday 28 September, Anton Ellenbroek, FAO & BlueBRIDGE, presented the Aquaculture Atlas Production System VRE during the Visualization and Virtual Lab session. The progress of BlueBRIDGE data services and the integration with the CLS EODA and MAESTRO was demonstrated. The support of the eInfrastructure for the AAPS services to acquire and analyze EO data, and to store, describe, and share the aquaculture maps was explained. In particular, the capacity of the tool to combine data from different missions, such as Landsat, Sentinel 1 and Sentinel 2, and the use of Copernicus data services was explained during the presentation.

EMODnet launches its first hackathon on open marine data and BlueBRIDGE contributes to it

The panel focused on open data, the existing barriers in data sharing and inspired the hackathon participants with examples of applications built on open data. The Fisheries Data Interoperability Working Group will present its early achievements at the upcoming  RDA Plenary meeting in Montreal, Canada.

The session will explain how the usage of the R programming language as orchestrator to manage metadata, data complying with OGC standards and controlled vocabularies is supporting the Tuna Fisheries Use Case. But it doesn’t stop there. The session is organised as a side event to extend its scope to other fishery-related fields and beyond: for example to the marine or earth observations domain.

The Open Science FAIR conference, 6-8 September 2017, Athens, hosts the second edition of the How FAIR friendly is your data catalogue? workshop. The first workshop was organised by BlueBRIDGE on 3 April 2017 in Barcelona co-located with the RDA Plenary Meeting. Donatella Castelli, Research Director at CNR-ISTI (Italy) & BlueBRIDGE Project Coordinator, will contribute to the Athens workshop giving a sneak preview of the BlueBRIDGE catalogue.

RDA Europe-BlueBRIDGE Datathon on Fisheries and Aquaculture: main outcomes and datathon material

On 15 and 16 June 2017, more than 70 data enthusiasts came to Heraklion, Crete, to participate in the RDA Europe-BlueBRIDGE datathon for fisheries and aquaculture. The event was kindly hosted by the Institute of Marine Biology, Biotechnology and Aquaculture of the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (IMBBC/HCMR) and allowed participants to brainstorm on three main challenges: i) Developing a holistic approach to spatial planning for marine protected areas based on knowledge transfer and integration; ii) Assessing new fisheries and aquaculture activities and mainstreaming environmental and socio-economic indicators; iii) Incorporating socio-economic and environmental data in aquaculture assessment, strategic planning and performance analysis. After a first introductory session chaired by Yannis Ioannidis, President and Gen. Director, Athena RIC, and Professor of Informatics at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, six initiatives, including EMODnet, the RDA Geospatial Interest Group and Fisheries Data Interoperability Working Group, LifeWatchGreece, the PHYSIS project and BlueBRIDGE presented their tools and datasets...

The report of the April Workshop “FAIR Friendly Research Data Catalogue: how far are we?” is out

The main outcomes of the BlueBRIDGE April workshop “FAIR Friendly Research Data Catalogue: how far are we?” are now available in our report (Download the report here).  
The workshop took place on 3 April 2017, in Barcelona (co-located with the 9th RDA Plenary Meeting) and brought together over 40 representatives of H2020 projects, e-infrastructures, European initiatives (such as ELIXIREPOSEUDATGEOSS, GOFAIR, ICOS) and data users, to understand how they are approaching the FAIR principles, what status they are at and to discuss together how to move forward.
