About University of Thessaly/Department of Ichthyology & Aquatic Environment (DIAE): DIAE was established at the academic year of 2002-03 under the School of Agricultural Sciences focusing mainly on aquatic living resources. DIAE, nowadays, comprises of 20 members of academic staff and offers high quality of undergraduate and postgraduate studies. The number of annually enrolled students at all levels has increased to ~100. It is the only higher educational academic Institution in Hellas, which offers an Honors’ first degree on aquatic living resources upon successful completion of 10 taught courses’ semesters. A one-year M.Sc. postgraduate degree is offered on sustainable aquatic production and conservation biology; as well as pursuing research leading to a Ph.D. DIAE is a leading Hellenic academic Institution supporting and conducting novel scientific research on aquatic living resources. DIAE adopts modern methods of teaching or conducting research and focuses on scientific issues mainly related to aquaculture, fisheries and conservation biology. Among other premises the multi-purpose aquarium for research on experimental rearing material is of outmost importance. 

The objectives of DIAE are:

  • Educate and train new scientists capable of following a successful scientific and professional career on aquatic living resources.
  • Diffusion of scientific knowledge and methodology to students on applied research topics such as fisheries, aquaculture and conservation biology.
  • Conduction of innovative/modern research (Centre/Institution of excellence).

Short description of the collaboration & main achievements in the period: Strong relationships in terms of academic, research and training activities have been established between the BlueBRIDGE project and its partners with University of Thessaly and especially with the Department of Ichthyology & Aquatic Environment (DIAE). Professors and undergraduate and postgraduate students from the department participated in the various workshops organised by BlueBRIDGE such as the RDA-Europe / BlueBRIDGE Datathon on Fisheries and Aquaculture and the one-day workshop on aquaculture solutions. A specialised training course in the Department of Ichthyology & Aquatic Environment (DIAE) presenting the challenges and solutions of BlueBRIDGE has taken place in December 2017 where 102 participants, professors and students have experimented the Sustainable Blue Economy VRE.

Plans for the future: The successful cooperation with the Department of Ichthyology & Aquatic Environment (DIAE) and in general with University of Thessaly is scheduled to be continued in the near future with the incorporation of the interactive training courses on e-infrastructures and VREs either within the undergraduate or/and the postgraduate programme.
